Hello, fellow travelers! Ann here, and I am so excited to share this itinerary with you.
As a mom, I’ve learned that some of the best family memories aren’t just from the big, planned-out destinations, but from the journey itself—the quirky stops, the unexpected discoveries, and the cozy places we call “home” for the night. My family and I live for a good road trip, and if there’s one place on earth that was made for road-tripping, it’s California.
But I’m not just talking about the 101 or the Golden Gate Bridge. I want to take you on a journey I’ve been dreaming up, one that goes beyond the expected. It’s a trip that captures the sheer variety of this amazing state, from the gilded romance of wine country to the majestic gates of a national park, the hidden history of the Central Valley, and a magical finale on a sun-drenched island and in a vibrant city.
This is the kind of trip that creates those “remember when…” moments. So, grab a coffee, open your map app, and let’s plan an unforgettable California adventure together.
Stop 1: The Oenophile’s Dream in Napa Valley
We’re starting this journey with a touch of pure, sophisticated magic. Forget the stress of being the designated driver; we’re kicking off this trip by immersing ourselves in wine country. And I’ve found the most wonderful way to do it: the Napa Valley Wine Train Experience.

Now, this isn’t just a hotel—it’s a destination in itself. You check in and are immediately transported to a bygone era of glamour and leisure. You’ll be staying in accommodations that are just steps away from where you board a meticulously restored vintage Pullman train. This is the part I just love: you get to journey through the heart of Napa’s world-famous vineyards, all while seated in a plush, velvet chair, glass of incredible Cabernet in hand.
They offer several different tours, but you absolutely must consider the Vista Dome. It’s an elevated observation car with curved glass windows, offering panoramic views of the rolling hills and endless vines. It feels like you’re floating through a painting.
But the experience is about so much more than the view. It’s the gourmet, multi-course meal prepared right on board. It’s the curated stops at iconic wineries like Charles Krug and V. Sattui, where you get private tours and tastings. It’s the complete release from the planning and driving, allowing you and your partner (or a very lucky friend!) to just connect and soak it all in. It’s the perfect, decadent start to our grand California journey.
My Tip: While the train is the star, I highly recommend booking a sunrise hot air balloon ride for the morning before you depart. Seeing the valley glow in the early light from high above… well, it’s a memory that will stick with you forever.
Stop 2: The Silicon Valley Oasis at Creekside Inn
After the indulgent hills of Napa, we’ll head south, bypassing the bustle of San Francisco for a different kind of Bay Area experience. Tucked away in Palo Alto, I’ve found a true hidden gem: Creekside Inn.

You know, you hear “Silicon Valley” and you think tech giants and glass buildings. But this hotel completely flips that script. It’s an absolute oasis, built right alongside the peaceful Matadero Creek. The moment you step onto the property, you’re surrounded by lush, beautiful gardens, towering trees, and the gentle sound of the water. It’s instantly relaxing.
The vibe is “eco-chic,” with a deep commitment to sustainability that I really appreciate. The rooms are bright and airy, many with private balconies overlooking the creek. My kids would beeline for the lovely heated outdoor pool, which is the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
It’s the perfect home base. From here, you’re just minutes from downtown Palo Alto, which is so charming and walkable, with fantastic restaurants and boutiques.
My Tip: You are right next to Stanford University, and you must take a few hours to walk the campus. The architecture, the Rodin Sculpture Garden, and the view from the Hoover Tower are all incredible. It’s a wonderful, easy way to expose the family to a bit of culture and history (and maybe inspire some future scholars!).
Stop 3: History & Majesty at El Capitan Hotel
Okay, now for a complete change of pace! We’re driving inland, east into the Central Valley, to the historic town of Merced. Why Merced? Because it’s the “Gateway to Yosemite,” and I’ve found the most perfect basecamp for our adventure: the El Capitan Hotel.

This isn’t just a hotel; it’s a revival. It’s a historic 19th-century building that has been lovingly and stylishly reborn. The moment you walk in, you feel this amazing energy—a blend of frontier history and modern, almost bohemian, luxury. The design details are just fantastic, paying homage to the building’s past while feeling completely fresh and new.
This hotel is a destination in itself, with three distinct dining spots. You can grab a casual, delicious bite at Native Son.. But for a truly special evening, you have to book a table at Rainbird. It’s their signature restaurant, offering an elevated, seasonal menu that celebrates the agricultural bounty of the Central Valley. It’s the kind of meal you talk about for weeks.
My Tip: This is your “Yosemite” stop! Plan to spend a full day exploring the park. It’s about a 90-minute drive to the Yosemite Valley floor, so leave early. Pack a picnic (ask the hotel!) and prepare to be awestruck. Seeing the real El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls… it’s a spiritual experience. And the best part? After a long day of hiking and being stunned by nature’s beauty, you get to return to the comfort and style of your wonderful hotel in Merced, not a crowded lodge.
Stop 4: Roaring Twenties Glamour at the Padre Hotel
Continuing south through the agricultural heartland of California, our next stop is a real icon. In downtown Bakersfield, you’ll find the Padre Hotel, and let me tell you, this place has stories.

Built in 1928, it’s a glamorous slice of California’s oil-boom history. The hotel has been beautifully preserved and updated with a quirky, eclectic, and luxurious style. It feels like stepping into a movie set, with rich colors, plush fabrics, and a dash of Art Deco flair.
What I love here is the sheer variety of experiences all under one roof. It’s a bit like a vertical neighborhood.
- The Farmacy Cafe: Your go-to for coffee and a quick, casual breakfast.
- Brimstone: A lively, Western-themed bar with great food.
- Prairie Fire: This is the one you can’t miss. It’s their incredible rooftop bar and lounge. You get these amazing views of downtown and the historic Fox Theatre, all while sitting around cozy fire pits. It’s the perfect spot to grab a craft cocktail and some delicious bites as the sun goes down. It’s just a fantastic, vibey spot
The Padre Hotel is the perfect, unexpected stop. It breaks up the long drive to Southern California and gives you a taste of a completely different side of the state—one filled with history, glamour, and a touch of rebellious spirit.
Stop 5: The Mediterranean Island Escape at Bellanca Hotel
Now the journey takes a truly magical turn. We’re heading to the coast, but not just to the beach… we’re going to an island! We’ll drive to the port in Long Beach or San Pedro, park the car, and board the Catalina Express ferry. In about an hour, you’ll be stepping off onto Catalina Island, arriving in the charming, crescent-shaped harbor of Avalon. It feels just like a little village on the Italian Riviera.
And our home here is the stunning Bellanca Hotel.

This boutique hotel is coastal chic perfected. It’s all bright whites, ocean blues, and natural textures. It’s fresh, airy, and instantly puts you in a vacation mindset. Many rooms have breathtaking views of the harbor, and waking up to that view is something else.
But the absolute best spot in the entire hotel is The Naughty Fox, their oceanfront, rooftop deck. It’s reserved for guests, making it feel like your own private club. You can enjoy craft cocktails and delicious bites while looking out over the water, watching the boats (and people) come and go. It’s pure bliss.
My Tip: The first thing you should do is rent a golf cart! It’s the main mode of transport in Avalon and so much fun. Take a scenic drive up to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden for incredible island-wide views. Then, spend the afternoon just strolling the waterfront, popping into the unique shops, and maybe even dipping your toes in the water at Descanso Beach.
Stop 6: The San Diego Finale—Choose Your Vibe!
For our grand finale, we’re heading to “America’s Finest City”: San Diego. I love this city because it offers so many different kinds of vacations, all in one place. So, for this last stop, I’m giving you three incredible—but totally different—options.
Vibe 1: Ultimate Beachfront Chic at Tower23 Hotel
If your dream is to wake up, walk onto your balcony, and smell the salt air, this is your place. Located right on the Pacific Beach boardwalk, Tower23 Hotel is named for the lifeguard tower right out front, and you simply cannot get closer to the ocean.

It’s ultra-modern, sleek, and sophisticated, with a design that’s all about glass, light, and those endless water views. It’s a fantastic spot for couples or families with older teens who love the vibrant beach energy. You can rent bikes from the hotel and cruise the boardwalk, try your hand at surfing, or just relax on the chic oceanfront sundeck.
The hotel’s restaurant, JRDN, is a destination in itself, famous for its amazing sushi, steaks, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the surf. You have to get a table for sunset—it’s unforgettable.
Vibe 2: The Heart of the Party at Margaritaville San Diego
If you want to be in the center of the action, look no further. The Margaritaville San Diego is a slice of tropical paradise right in the beating heart of the downtown Gaslamp Quarter.

From the moment you walk in, the vibe is just fun. It’s casual-luxe, with all the laid-back, “5 o’clock somewhere” energy you could want, but done with real style. The rooms are a playful escape, but the real star is the rooftop pool deck. With the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar, private cabanas, and fantastic city views, it’s the perfect place to unwind with the whole family after a day of exploring.
You’re walking distance from Petco Park (go see a Padres game!), dozens of amazing restaurants, and a short drive from Balboa Park and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. It’s the perfect, energetic hub for a family adventure.
Vibe 3: Retro Road Trip Fun at Rambler Motel
I have such a soft spot for this one. Just south of downtown in Chula Vista, the Rambler Motel is a total hidden gem that perfectly captures the spirit of our California road trip.

They’ve taken a classic, mid-century motel and given it a vibrant, stylish, and super fun makeover. It’s retro-cool at its best. The rooms are bright and playful, the pool is the centerpiece of the property, and “The Rambler” is a great spot to grab a drink.
It’s an unpretentious, friendly, and wonderfully affordable home base for exploring a different side of San Diego. You’re close to the Living Coast Discovery Center (a must-see!) and it’s an easy drive to Coronado Island or even the outlets at the border. It’s the perfect, charming, and fun-loving bookend to our incredible journey.
Your California Story is Waiting
From the vineyards of Napa to the granite cliffs of Yosemite, the historic glamour of the Padre, the island magic of Catalina, and the sunny shores of San Diego… this is a journey that shows you the real California. It’s a trip filled with diverse flavors, stunning landscapes, and, most importantly, the chance to create those precious memories with the people you love.
I hope this has sparked your imagination! Planning it is half the fun, but I promise, the journey itself is even better.
Happy travels!
