California’s Secret Coast: Boutique Escapes from Catalina to Monterey

You know that feeling when the morning sun hits the Pacific, and for a split second, the whole world just seems to go quiet? I think we all spend our lives chasing those moments—the ones where the mental “to-do” list finally turns off, and we’re just there. As a mom, my days are usually a whirlwind of schedules, snacks, and “did you remember your backpack?” But when I travel, I look for something different. I look for what I call the “Secret Coast.”

California is famous for its iconic landmarks, but there is a quieter, more restorative side of the Golden State that is just waiting to be discovered. It’s a place of salt-sprayed cliffs, hidden gardens, and boutique hotels that feel like a warm hug rather than a cold lobby. This isn’t about rushing from one tourist trap to the next; it’s about “slow travel.” It’s about lingering over a second cup of coffee on a balcony, biking along the marina at sunset, and creating those shared experiences that become the family stories we tell for decades.

I am so excited to tell you about some of my favorite coastal gems. These aren’t just hotels; they are carefully curated gateways to the best versions of your vacation. So, take a deep breath, and let’s explore the coast together!

An Island Oasis in the City: Kona Kai San Diego Resort

Our journey starts in San Diego, but probably not where you’d expect. Tucked away on the tip of Shelter Island is Kona Kai San Diego Resort. Now, I love San Diego, but the downtown bustle can be a lot. Kona Kai feels like a total secret. It has this incredible island-inspired vibe that makes you feel like you’ve flown to the South Pacific, even though you’re just minutes from the airport.

The resort has this wonderful, breezy atmosphere. The rooms are bright and tropical, with pops of turquoise and sand that mirror the views right outside your window. If you’re traveling with family, this is an absolute haven.

The Experience: Private Beaches and Bonfires

One of the most unique features here is the private beach. In a city where beaches are usually packed, having your own stretch of sand is a luxury you absolutely must experience. My kids love playing in the sand while I relax in one of their luxurious cabanas. But the real magic happens at night. You can book a beach bonfire, complete with wood, chairs, and all the fixings for s’mores. There is nothing like sitting under the stars, the sound of the marina lapping against the shore, sharing stories around the fire. It’s a core memory waiting to happen.

Dining and Rejuvenation

When you get hungry, head over to Vessel Restaurant + Bar. The 360-degree bar is a showstopper, and the coastal cuisine is just fantastic. I always recommend the local seafood—it’s fresh, thoughtful, and perfectly paired with the marina views.

And for the moms (and dads!) who need a little restorative time, SpaTerre is incredible. They specialize in exotic Indonesian treatments and Noble House signature rituals. I think a Javanese Royal Spa treatment is exactly what’s needed to truly settle into “vacation mode.” Afterward, take a stroll through Shelter Island Shoreline Park to see the Yokohama Friendship Bell. It’s a peaceful, hidden corner of the city that most people miss.

Life on the Water: The Portofino Hotel & Marina

Heading north to Redondo Beach, we find The Portofino Hotel & Marina. This property is truly one-of-a-kind because it sits on its own private peninsula within the King Harbor Marina. It’s essentially a front-row seat to the Pacific.

The style here is “coastal chic” at its best. The rooms are designed with soft blues and nautical touches that make you feel like you’re on a luxury yacht. Most rooms have private balconies where you can watch the sailboats glide by.

The “Ann” Angle: Biking the Strand

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to grab the hotel’s complimentary cruiser bikes and hit The Strand. This is a 22-mile paved coastal path that connects the beach towns. I love spending an afternoon biking from Redondo toward Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach. You can stop for an ice cream, browse the boutiques, and just soak in that California sunshine. It’s active, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to see the “real” coast.

Sea Lions and Serious Food

Nature is literally at your doorstep here. You’ll hear the local sea lions barking from the docks—they’re delightful neighbors! For dinner, you don’t even have to leave the property. BALEENkitchen is famous for its “serious food and light mood.” The outdoor fire pits on the patio are so cozy. I suggest trying their pan-seared scallops or a signature burger while watching the sunset over the masts of the boats. It feels so intimate and personal, like you’ve been invited to a private club.

Step Into a Postcard: Bellanca Hotel

If you really want to “expose” yourself to a new experience, you have to take the Catalina Express across the water to Bellanca Hotel in Avalon. Catalina Island feels like a slice of the Mediterranean dropped right off the coast of California. It’s charming, historic, and wonderfully quirky.

Bellanca is the epitome of seaside chic. It’s modern and sophisticated, but with a warm, welcoming heart. The design is so thoughtfully planned—think clean lines, beautiful tiles, and a rooftop deck that will take your breath away.

The Island Lifestyle

Catalina is a place where you swap cars for golf carts. I highly recommend renting one for an hour to explore the winding roads above the town of Avalon. The views from the top are simply amazing! For a unique shared experience, book a Glass Bottom Boat Voyage. It’s a fantastic way for the kids to see the bright orange Garibaldi fish and the lush kelp forests without getting wet.

Dining with a View

When you’re ready for a cocktail and some incredible food, The Naughty Fox at the hotel is the place to be. Their Ahi Poke Nachos are legendary, and the atmosphere is fun and vibrant. It’s the perfect spot to sit, enjoy the harbor view, and just celebrate being on vacation. And if you’re feeling adventurous, ask about the Catalina bison—seeing these massive creatures in the island’s interior is a story you’ll be telling for years!

The Soul of Monterey: A Trio of Hidden Gems

Monterey is a place that is very near and dear to my heart. It’s so much more than just a stop on the way to Big Sur. It’s a town with deep roots, incredible food, and a coastline that is both rugged and beautiful. I want to share three very different ways to experience it through three amazing Curator properties.

1. A Historic Escape: Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa

If you appreciate history, you will fall in love with Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa. It was originally built in 1824 as the home of Don Estéban Munras, and it was the first residence built outside the old Presidio. Today, it’s a stunning hacienda-style estate that feels like a peaceful sanctuary.

The hotel is set among lush, carefully tended gardens that are so quiet and restorative. It’s a place where you can truly “unplug.”

  • The Spa Experience: You absolutely must visit DESUAR Spa during your stay. They have a philosophy of balancing mind and body, and their treatments are heaven. I think the “Casa Glow-sagge” is a delightful way to refresh your skin and your spirit.
  • Spanish Flavors: Their restaurant, Estéban Restaurant, serves Spanish-inspired tapas with a California twist. The outdoor terrace with its fire pits is so inviting. I recommend ordering the Paella Del Mar to share with the family—it’s filled with fresh Monterey Bay seafood and so much flavor.

2. Modern and Vibrant: Wave Street Inn

Just steps from the world-famous Cannery Row is the Wave Street Inn. This hotel is for those who love modern design and want to be right in the heart of the action. It’s inspired by the industrial history of the area but feels completely fresh and vibrant.

The rooms are full of bright colors and nature-inspired art, making it a very happy place to wake up. You are perfectly positioned to walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I think the new “Into the Deep” exhibit is incredible—you can see creatures from the deep sea that look like they’re from another planet!

The “Ann” Angle: The Best Sourdough in Town

Now, here is my favorite local tip. Everyone talks about San Francisco sourdough, but Monterey has some hidden gems. Walk a few blocks to Ad Astra Bread Co. Grab a fresh loaf of sourdough or a giant cinnamon roll, and head back to the outdoor fire pits at Wave Street Inn. There is something so simple and wonderful about fresh bread and a warm fire—it’s the perfect way to spend a “slow travel” afternoon.

3. Romantic Beachfront Elegance: Spindrift Inn

Finally, if you’re looking for a truly romantic escape, the Spindrift Inn is a dream. It’s a Victorian-style hotel located right on the sands of McAbee Beach.

The rooms are so elegant, with canopy beds and wood-burning fireplaces. It feels like you’ve stepped into a postcard from a more graceful era.

  • Breakfast in Bed: One of my favorite things about the Spindrift is their signature continental breakfast. It’s delivered to your room on a silver tray every morning. Imagine opening your window to the sound of the waves and the fresh sea air while you enjoy a croissant and coffee in bed. It is pure bliss.
  • Sunset Sips: Every evening, they host a wine and cheese reception. It’s a lovely, thoughtful touch that allows you to connect with other travelers and share your favorite discoveries of the day.

Tips for Exploring the “Secret Coast”

To truly immerse yourself in these coastal gems, here are a few specific suggestions for your journey:

  • Pacific Grove Coastal Trail: If you’re staying in Monterey, take a walk or bike ride through Pacific Grove. The rocky coastline there is stunning, and the tide pools at Asilomar State Beach are a must-see. You can spend hours looking for crabs and sea anemones.
  • Whale Watching: Monterey Bay is one of the best places in the world to see whales. Whether it’s humpbacks or gray whales, seeing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is a powerful experience for both kids and adults.
  • The Anticipation: Half the joy of travel is the planning! I love sitting down with my family and looking at the “Experiences” pages for these hotels. It builds so much excitement and helps everyone feel involved in the journey.

Final Thoughts from the Coast

California’s coast is a place of endless discovery. But it’s the smaller, more intimate moments that really stick with us—the smell of the salt air, the warmth of a bonfire, the taste of fresh sourdough, and the laughter shared with loved ones.

I believe that the Curator Hotel & Resort Collection properties offer more than just a room; they offer a sense of place. They invite you to slow down, to be present, and to create memories that are as enduring as the coastline itself.

I’m so glad I could share these hidden gems with you. Whether you choose the tropical vibe of San Diego, the marina life of Redondo Beach, the island charm of Catalina, or the historic soul of Monterey, I know you’re going to have a fantastic, restorative, and absolutely wonderful journey.
