You know, I was just thinking about my last “work trip” – and I put that in quotes because, honestly, when the destination is as amazing as some of the places I’ve been lucky enough to visit, it barely feels like work at all! My husband and I are always looking for ways to blend our professional lives with our love of travel, and for us, that means finding those special spots where we can truly focus while being completely surrounded by the beauty of nature. It’s about more than just a change of scenery; it’s about a total shift in perspective. When the kids are at a good age and we have a moment to ourselves, we love to take these little excursions. It’s like, the world just seems to open up when you’re looking at it from a new angle, you know?
For the longest time, “business travel” meant a stuffy conference room with fluorescent lights. But I’ve found that some of the most productive, most creative ideas come when you’re not confined to that kind of space. It’s about finding a place that inspires you, a place where the air is fresh and the views are breathtaking. That’s why I’m so excited to share with you two truly incredible places that are perfect for this very idea—one nestled in the mountains and one right on the coast. They both prove that you don’t have to choose between getting things done and making unforgettable memories. You can do both, do them beautifully.
Mountain Majesty & Mindful Meetings: The Skamania Lodge Experience
First, let’s talk about the mountains. There’s something so grounding about the towering trees and the quiet majesty of a mountain landscape. It just makes you feel so small in the best possible way, and it really helps put everything into perspective. We absolutely fell in love with a place called the Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington. I mean, from the moment you arrive, you just feel it. The Pacific Northwest has a kind of magic to it, and this place really captures it all. The lodge itself is a gorgeous testament to its natural surroundings, with that wonderful, rustic-chic vibe that just feels so warm and inviting. You’ll find yourself just wanting to curl up by one of the massive stone fireplaces with a cup of coffee.

What’s so great about Skamania Lodge is how it’s designed to make you feel connected to the outdoors, no matter where you are. The views of the Columbia River Gorge are simply out of this world. We spent so much time just standing on our balcony, watching the mist roll over the water and the sun rise over the cliffs. It’s the kind of view that could make any business call feel like a walk in the park. And for a team retreat or a brainstorming session, can you imagine a more inspiring backdrop? The lodge offers so many unique meeting spaces, so you’re literally surrounded by the kind of wild beauty that sparks creativity and big ideas. Just look at the amazing variety of venues they offer for a truly productive getaway:
- The Stevenson Ballroom & Cascade Ballroom: These are perfect for those larger-scale events, conferences, and celebrations. With thousands of square feet of flexible space, they can accommodate big groups with ease, all while providing a sophisticated setting.
- The Washington Room: This is one of my favorites! It’s a cozy, soft-seating space designed for creative meetings and brainstorming sessions. The best part is it has an adjacent outdoor patio with a fire pit, so you can easily take your conversations outside under the stars.
- The Meadow Room: For a more intimate board meeting or retreat, this room is ideal. It offers stunning, panoramic views of the Columbia River and the Cascade Mountains, which, let’s be honest, is way better than a plain office wall.
- The Baker Meeting Room: This is a great space for focused collaboration. Natural light streams in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, keeping everyone feeling energized and engaged. It’s so much more refreshing than an old-school conference room!
- The Moonlight & Riverview Pavilions: For a truly unique experience, these outdoor pavilions are absolutely incredible. They are perfect for events, corporate retreats, or even a spectacular lunch, allowing guests to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Gorge right from the forest floor.
And when it’s time to step away from the laptop, oh, the adventures you can have! Skamania is a playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. There’s an aerial park with zip lines and a ropes course that is so much fun, it’s a fantastic way to bond with a team or just get your own adrenaline pumping. We also loved exploring the hiking trails right on the property. We took a peaceful walk along the Columbia River and just let the sounds of nature wash over us. The lodge also has a beautiful spa with a sauna and whirlpools, which felt like an absolute treat after a day of meetings and exploring. I definitely recommend the massage to melt away any stress. And for the more adventurous types, there’s a world of kayaking, white-water rafting, and windsurfing nearby. It’s so wonderful to be able to mix business with such incredible recreation.
Now, let’s talk food because, as you know, that’s always a big part of any trip for me! Skamania has several dining options that really celebrate the flavors of the Pacific Northwest. We loved the Cascade Dining Room, where you can enjoy a delicious meal with a panoramic view of the Gorge. The menu features local, seasonal ingredients, and everything we tried was just so fresh and flavorful. And for something a little more casual, the River Rock Lounge is the perfect spot for a post-work cocktail and some appetizers by the fire. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, chat with your colleagues or loved ones, and feel completely at home.
A Coastal Business Retreat at Pelican Grand Beach Resort
After all that mountain air, I’m ready to take you on a journey to the complete opposite! Let’s swap the towering trees for swaying palms and the mountain mist for the salty sea breeze. I’m talking about a place where productivity meets pure ocean bliss: Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This coastal gem is a total breath of fresh air, in every sense of the word. From the moment you pull up, you feel like you’ve been transported to a charming, old-world beach retreat. The resort has this classic, elegant style that just says “relaxation.” It’s so different from the typical modern resort, and I absolutely loved it.

The location is everything here. Pelican Grand Beach Resort sits right on the Atlantic Ocean, and I mean right on it. Our room had a stunning balcony with a direct view of the ocean, and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing was just the most wonderful way to start the day. For a business trip, this is a game-changer. Imagine taking a meeting with the ocean as you’re stepping out for a few minutes to feel the sand between your toes during a break. It’s a fantastic way to recharge and get your creative juices flowing. The resort has some incredible meeting and event spaces, many of which have stunning ocean views, so you never feel disconnected from that beautiful coastline. The variety of spaces here is amazing for everything from a small retreat to a large conference:
- Oceanview Ballroom & Atlantic Ballroom: These elegant indoor ballrooms are perfect for a wide range of events. With their wrap-around, floor-to-ceiling windows and stunning chandeliers, you can host a productive meeting or a beautiful reception while still enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean and beach.
- Oceanview Terrace & Atlantic Terrace: If you want to embrace the Florida sun and ocean breeze, these outdoor terraces are the way to go. Located on the rooftop, they offer panoramic views of the water and are ideal for a ceremony, cocktail reception, or a corporate gathering that feels a little more special.
- Everglades Room: This indoor space offers a bit more privacy while still providing beautiful ocean and city views. It’s great for mid-sized meetings or breakout sessions and has a separate alcove that’s perfect for coffee breaks or buffet setups.
- Executive Boardroom: For those small, high-level meetings, this intimate space is a great fit. It provides a quiet, dedicated environment for a small group to focus and collaborate without any distractions.
- Hospitality Suite: This versatile space is perfect for smaller meetings, training sessions, or even as a hub for your team. It’s a comfortable and functional room that’s a nice home base for a more relaxed, hands-on session.
Of course, a big part of any coastal trip is the fun, and this resort does not disappoint. The resort has Fort Lauderdale’s only lazy river! And yes, we absolutely had to try it. It’s so much fun and such a great way to just completely let go and relax. The private beach is also a huge plus. We spent a lot of time just lounging on the sand, soaking up the sun, and taking long walks along the shore. The resort also offers so many activities, like kayaking and paddle boarding, which are a fantastic way to get out on the water. And if you’re looking for a little pampering, the PURE Spa is the perfect place to unwind. It’s a full-service spa with treatments that will make you feel like a brand new person.
And the food? Oh my goodness, the food. They have an amazing restaurant called OCEAN2000, and it is a must-try. The dining room has incredible ocean views, and the food is just as spectacular. They specialize in fresh seafood, and every dish we had was just so delicious. We also loved the more casual O2K Lounge and Emporium, which is this adorable old-fashioned ice cream parlor. It’s the perfect spot for a sweet treat after a long day. You can also have a private beachside dinner, which is just the most romantic and special experience.
So, whether you need the serene focus of the mountains or the invigorating energy of the coast, there are incredible options for blending business and pleasure. My family and I are all about creating these kinds of opportunities, and I think it’s so important to show our kids that work can be something you do with joy, in places that truly inspire you. It’s not about escaping from life, but about immersing yourself in it more fully. And when you can do that in a place as wonderful as Skamania Lodge or Pelican Grand Beach Resort, well, that’s just a memory you’ll carry with you long after the trip is over. I hope this gives you some wonderful ideas for your next work trip or family vacation! Happy planning, and here’s to a little more productivity with a whole lot more panorama!
