Wine Country Wonders: A Feast for All the Senses

There’s a certain magic to California’s wine country that goes so far beyond what’s in the glass. It’s a feeling in the air, the quality of the light, the incredible food, and the stunning landscapes. It truly is a feast for all the senses.

While I adore a wonderful glass of wine, for me, the most treasured memories come from the entire experience—the shared laughter over an amazing meal, the thrill of a new adventure, and the quiet moments spent just soaking in the beauty of it all. I’m so excited to share some of my favorite ways to immerse yourself in the wonders of Napa, Sonoma, and Carmel Valley.

Napa & Sonoma: The Heart of a Golden State Dream

When you think of wine country, the iconic, sun-drenched hills of Napa and Sonoma are probably what come to mind. It’s a landscape of rolling green hills, meticulously planted vineyards, and a feeling of sophisticated relaxation. But beyond the tasting rooms lie adventures and culinary delights that will truly captivate you.

Where to Settle In

For a classic, grand Napa escape where everything you could possibly need is right at your fingertips, you will fall in love with the Silverado Resort. It’s set on this incredible, historic estate, and it feels like its own little world. With two championship golf courses, a world-class spa, and beautiful pools, it’s a destination in itself. It’s wonderful for couples seeking a romantic getaway or even for a family trip, with spacious suites that give everyone room to spread out and relax.

If you’re looking for something a bit more intimate and closer to the action of downtown Napa, the River Terrace Inn is a charming boutique hideaway. We love its location right on the Napa River. You can take a lovely morning stroll along the river trail and then easily walk to the wonderful shops and restaurants downtown. In the evenings, gathering around their outdoor fire pits with a glass of wine is just the perfect way to end the day.

Beyond the Bottle: Napa & Sonoma Experiences

A Culinary Pilgrimage

Napa Valley is home to some of the world’s best restaurants. For a truly once-in-a-lifetime meal that you will talk about for years, you must try to get a reservation at The French Laundry in Yountville. Chef Thomas Keller’s temple of fine dining is legendary for a reason. Walking through their culinary garden across the street and then experiencing the artistry on each plate is pure magic. For a slightly more accessible but equally delightful experience, Yountville is packed with other incredible options like Bouchon Bakery for a perfect pastry or sandwich.

When you’re exploring the charming streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you absolutely must have a meal at La Bicyclette. It feels like you’ve stepped into the most charming, rustic bistro in the French countryside. It’s warm, cozy, and always bustling with happy energy. Their menu changes with the seasons and is centered around a magnificent wood-fired oven, turning out the most amazing pizzas and roasted dishes. It’s perfect for a romantic lunch or a lively dinner.

For a wonderfully relaxed and delicious meal right in the heart of Carmel Valley village, we just adore Café Rustica. With its country-style decor and a wonderful patio, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of wine tasting or hiking. They serve incredible Cal-Italian dishes, from wood-fired pizzas to hearty pastas and roasted chicken, all made with care and the freshest local ingredients. It’s one of those warm, welcoming places that makes you feel right at home.

Float Above It All

There is nothing more breathtaking than seeing the patchwork of vineyards from above as the sun rises. A hot air balloon ride is an absolute must! We had an incredible flight with Napa Valley Aloft. Waking up in the pre-dawn quiet, feeling the thrill as the balloon lifts off, and then peacefully floating over the valley as the world wakes up is an experience that’s both serene and exhilarating. It gives you a perspective on the sheer beauty of the region that you just can’t get from the ground.

A Journey Through the Vines

I know we’re looking beyond the bottle, but the Napa Valley Wine Train Experience is so much more than a wine tasting—it’s a journey back in time. Climbing aboard the magnificently restored vintage Pullman cars feels incredibly glamorous, but for a truly unforgettable view, I always suggest booking a seat in the Vista Dome. It’s an elevated, glass-domed car that offers stunning, panoramic scenes of the vineyards as you travel from downtown Napa up to the charming town of St. Helena and back.

While the classic Gourmet Express lunch is a wonderful three-hour journey in itself, there are also full-day tours that include exclusive stops at historic wineries. Imagine being personally escorted from the train for a private tasting at an iconic estate like Charles Krug or Grgich Hills! You’re greeted with a glass of sparkling wine when you board, you’ll enjoy a multi-course meal of beautiful California cuisine, and you can even step into an open-air car to feel the breeze and get that perfect photo. It’s a wonderfully romantic and relaxing way to see the heart of Napa, all without having to worry about driving.

Explore Charming Towns

Take time to wander through the delightful towns nestled in the valleys. St. Helena has a quintessential Main Street that feels like a movie set, with wonderful boutiques and galleries. I can never resist popping into Acres Home & Garden for beautiful, curated home goods that are just so inspiring, or Browse the stunning fine art at a gallery like AERENA Galleries & Gardens. Just down the road, you’ll find Yountville, which I think of as the culinary heart of the valley. It’s also a haven for art lovers; strolling the Yountville Art Walk to see the outdoor sculptures is a must, and we love visiting the vibrant, contemporary works at Gallery AF.

In Sonoma, the historic plaza in Healdsburg is one of my favorite spots to spend an afternoon, surrounded by tasting rooms, amazing restaurants, and shady trees perfect for a picnic. You can spend hours Browse the artisan home goods and gifts at a beautifully curated shop like Gathered, and the expansive Paul Mahder Gallery, tucked just off the square in a massive Quonset hut, is one of the most impressive art spaces in all of wine country. For a more laid-back, old-school charm, head to the northern end of Napa Valley to explore Calistoga. It has a more eclectic feel, where you can find unique, local pieces at a place like Calistoga Pottery or get lost in the shelves of a wonderful independent bookstore like Copperfield’s Books.

Carmel Valley: A Retreat for Sunshine & Serenity

Just a couple of hours south, Carmel Valley offers a different, yet equally enchanting, wine country experience. It feels a bit more rustic and laid-back than Napa, with a sun-drenched, tranquil vibe. Here, the rolling hills are dotted with oak trees, and the air smells of lavender and rosemary.

Where to Find Your Oasis

For a truly indulgent and serene escape, the Bernardus Lodge & Spa is an absolute paradise. From the moment you arrive and walk down the lavender-lined path, you feel your worries start to melt away. This place is an oasis of rustic elegance, with a world-class spa, a sparkling pool, and even a croquet lawn! We adore their garden-to-table philosophy; you can literally see the gardens where the ingredients for your incredible meals are grown. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself or a loved one.

Garden-to-Table Goodness

The culinary heart of the lodge is the Lucia Restaurant & Bar. Enjoying a meal on their stunning terrace, surrounded by the beauty of the gardens and the Santa Lucia Mountains, is an essential Carmel Valley experience. The food is fresh, imaginative, and a true celebration of the local bounty—you can even see the two-acre garden where much of it is grown! But the celebration of local flavors doesn’t stop there! The whole area is a treasure trove of incredible food.

When you’re exploring the charming streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you absolutely must have a meal at La Bicyclette. It feels like you’ve stepped into the most charming, rustic bistro in the French countryside. It’s warm, cozy, and always bustling with happy energy. They serve incredible Cal-Italian dishes, from wood-fired pizzas to hearty pastas and roasted chicken, all made with care and the freshest local ingredients. It’s one of those warm, welcoming places that makes you feel right at home.

Explore on Foot

For those who love to be active, the hiking here is spectacular. Garland Ranch Regional Park is just a short drive away and offers trails for every skill level. You can take an easy stroll along the Carmel River or embark on a more strenuous climb for breathtaking views that stretch all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It’s a wonderful way to experience the natural, rugged beauty of the region.

And for a completely different but equally breathtaking experience, you absolutely cannot miss Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea. It’s often called the “crown jewel” of the State Parks, and that doesn’t even do it justice! It’s a place of dramatic coastal beauty where easy, mostly flat trails lead you along cliffs overlooking the most stunning turquoise coves. The Cypress Grove Trail and the loop around Sea Lion Point are must-dos where you can listen to the barking sea lions and watch for sea otters playing in the kelp beds below. It is just magical, and a little tip—try to go on a weekday or early in the morning, as its beauty is very popular!

A Fairytale Village by the Sea

You simply cannot visit this area without spending a day in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It’s the most charming village you can imagine, and I mean that literally—it’s filled with real-life fairytale cottages, like the famous “Hansel and Gretel” houses on Torres Street, that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook. A huge part of the fun is getting lost in its maze of secret passageways to discover hidden courtyards; you simply have to find the beautiful Court of the Fountains, a stunning little European-style oasis tucked away from the main street. The town is famous for its art scene, and we love peeking into the world-renowned Weston Gallery to see iconic photography. For unique shopping, you can’t miss the legendary Cheese Shop with its hundreds of varieties—the staff is so wonderful with samples!—or the adorable Cottage of Sweets for a nostalgic treat. And it all leads down to the stunning, white-sand Carmel Beach, which is framed by iconic cypress trees and is one of the most wonderfully dog-friendly places I’ve ever seen—perfect for a sunset walk.

Whether you’re floating above the vines at dawn, savoring a world-class meal, or discovering a hidden path in a charming village, you’ll find that the true wonder of wine country is the beautiful tapestry of experiences it offers. It’s about slowing down, savoring each moment, and creating memories that delight all of your senses.
